Founded in 1964 as Blue Ribbon Sports by Bill Bowerman and Phil Knight, Nike officially took its name in 1971 after the Greek goddess of victory. Beginning as a distributor for Japanese shoes, the brand exploded after Bowerman invented his famous waffle-soled running shoes and the iconic "Swoosh" was introduced.
